The position We are looking for an early-stage researcher for an industrial PhD student position with focus on bioderived materials for the additive manufacturing of sustainable and bio-degradable wearable electronics.
The position is part of a Marie Sk?odowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) Doctoral Network ( FERNS (https://www.ferns-project.eu/ ; GA: 101226611)”.
Duties The successful candidate will assess the use of low impact and possibly bioderived materials as core components for the development of functional materials (inks and substrates) for application in printed wearables (e.g. e-patch and e-textile) technologies or smart farming.
Activities carried out in the project will be, but not exclusively: (i) development of low impacting functional inks, (ii) development of bioderived films, (iii) development of processes for the printing of the developed materials and (iv) optimization of processes and strategies for the assembling of functional integrating system.
The project will include collaborations with international partners, including short stays (ca. 1 month) in the Netherlands and UK .
The student will be enrolled in the industrial PhD program of LiU. Supervision will be guaranteed by RISE with the support of Prof. Klas Tybrandt at LiU . As part of his/her program, the student will have to follow multidisciplinary courses (a maximum of 60 Credits depending on relevance of undertaken MSC courses).
Qualifications Qualified to PhD studentships are only those who are or have been admitted to graduate studies. The ideal student will have a Master in Material Science, Material Chemistry, Applied Physics or similar subject with significant expertise in the area of material development and characterization. During Bachelor/Master studies, the student will have taken courses in polymer physics, nanotechnology, physical chemistry, inorganic chemistry and material characterization. Knowledge in screen-printing and/or inkjet printing are desirable.
The student should have a genuine interest in science and for learning new skills, constancy for experimental work and should be able to work collaboratively in a multicultural and multidisciplinary team. Research at RISE and the LiU is carried out predominantly in English, so relative fluency is required.
Further mandatory requirements 1.MSCA Eligibility requirements: Applicants must satisfy the MSCA definition of Doctoral Candidates (DC): The applicants should not be in possession or have successfully defended a doctoral degree at the time of the call deadline.
2.MSCA Mobility requirements: Applicants must not have lived or carried out their main activity in Sweden for more than 12 months in the past 3 years immediately prior to the Call deadline.
3. FERNS Academic qualifications: Applicants must hold a relevant Master degree or equivalent at the time of the application. The educational background should fit with the required skills announced for each DC.
Exception: In case a candidate has not obtained yet their Master’s degree at the Call closing date, they can nevertheless apply. Proof of acquisition of the Master degree should be provided before being offered a contract of employment.
Terms The selected candidate will be appointed under a 36-months full-time employment contract with full social security and fiscal coverage, as foreseen by Sweden national legislation.
Starting date: May-June 2026, or by agreement.
Salary: The salary will be based on the allowances, set by the EU commission as part of the program, and on the regional taxation. As a PhD candidate you are normally paid from gross SEK 450 000 per annum before tax, depending on qualifications and seniority.

Job description
As a member of the Process Engineering and R&D team, you will both excel at optimizing processes in a pilot-production line and be able to develop expertise in manufacturing and development. In your daily work, you will have a close interaction with the engineering and production teams. You will also interact with international suppliers and internal customers within the STMicroelectronics group.

In this role you will be doing both office and practical work. You will work with crystal growth pilot-production by planning, carrying out and analyzing processes. You will improve processes, procedures, and equipment to enhance efficiency and quality. You will also participate in projects aiming at industrializing R&D processes and products.


Your profile
We would like to see that you have a MS or BS degree in either Industrial Production, Physics, Mechanical or Chemical Engineering. Other specializations can be of interest if you have competence and experience in the below given areas. You have at least 3 months’ professional experience relevant to this position.

We are looking for candidates that have knowledge in materials and in production improvement methods. We valuate experience of solid-state materials such as semiconductors, ceramics, metals, or similar as well as a genuine interest in coating or manufacturing techniques for such materials. Som medlem i Processingenjörs och R&D teamet kommer du både att optimera processer och kvalitet i en pilotproduktionslinje och utveckla din expertis inom tillverkning och utveckling. Du kommer att arbeta i ett team av mycket motiverade kollegor där problemlösning ofta sker i grupp. I ditt dagliga arbete kommer du att ha en nära interaktion med ingenjörs-, produktions- och underhållsteam. I rollen kommer du att utföra både administrativt och praktiskt arbete. Du kommer att planera och driva pilotproduktion av kristalltillväxt genom att planera, utföra och analysera processer. About the position
We are looking for a development engineer who will work with the development of embedded system hardware, software and firmware solutions. The position is specifically connected to RISE Printed, Bio- and Organic Electronic activities. The project work is performed in close collaboration with multiple Swedish and international partners. You will be working together with the project’s team of experts.

As a development engineer your main task will be the practical realization of embedded systems for proof-of-concept and technology system demonstrators. Your work will include design and development work, coordination of prototype manufacturing, experimental work, electrical characterization, evaluation of results and dissemination.

Who are you?
We think you have a strong interest in both electronic hardware and software design. You hold at least an MSc or equivalent qualification in electronic engineering, physics, or similar related subject. Work experience is a merit but not mandatory. The position is part of an Innovative Training Network (ITN) project (call: H2020-MSCA-ITN-2018) entitled “Biosensing with ORGanic ElectronicS (BORGES)”.Duties The appointed PhD student will have the duties to evaluate different printing processes (including inkjet printing, screen printing, gravure printing, doctor blade coating and aerosoljet printing) for the manufacturing of organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs) and electrolyte-gated organic field effect transistors (EGOFETs) on different substrates (e.g. PET, paper etc.) by using commercial inks as well as inks developed within the consortium. The impact of dimension variations of the printed features (e.g. critical structure dimensions and film thickness), different device architectures (e.g. vertical vs. lateral arrangement and extended gate architectures) and varying manufacturing process parameters (e.g. curing temperature, curing duration, intensity of UV light and sintering) on the OECT and EGOFET performances will be evaluated, and the manufacturability and processability of different inks will be the core aspects of the project. The project will include collaborations with external partners, including short stays in Italy (ca. 1 month) and France (ca. 1 month), to further develop technology applications. The student will be enrolled in the industrial PhD program of the Linköping University. As part of his/her program, the student will have to follow courses (60 Credits); the student will be encouraged to design a multidisciplinary program of courses to help him/her to boost creativity and open mind thinking.Qualifications Qualified to PhD studentships are only those who are, or have been, admitted to graduate studies. The ideal student will have a Master´s degree in Materials science, Applied physics, or similar subject, with significant expertise in the area of material development and characterization. During his/her Bachelor/Master studies, the student should have taken courses in polymer physics, nanotechnology, physical chemistry, inorganic chemistry and material characterization. Knowledge in screen printing and/or inkjet printing is desirable.The student should be initiative, have a genuine interest in science and for learning new skills, and show constancy for experimental work. Furthermore, the student should be able to work in collaboration with other scientists of different cultural/scientific backgrounds.Research at RISE Acreo and the Laboratory of Organic Electronics is carried out predominantly in English, so relative fluency is favorable.Further mandatory requirements According to the funding agency requirement, the candidate should be an early stage researcher (less than four years of experience in research) and he/she must not have lived in Sweden for more than one year in the previous three years. Starting date and appointment time The starting date is August 2019, or by agreement. The appointment will continue until further notice for a maximum of one year at a time. We are looking for a researcher with skills in electrochemistry to work in the field of Printed, Bio- and Organic Electronics for a full-time permanent employment in Norrköping.

About the position
The position is specifically connected to RISE Printed, Bio- and Organic Electronics activities in Norrköping that are important strategic research areas within RISE. Your daily work entails performing research assignments in projects that are run in close collaboration with Swedish and international partners from both academia and industry. You will be working together with a team of experts where you will help to maintain our research and development offering at the technological forefront of the field.

The role will have focus on the development of electrochemical systems, including methods for fabricating electrodes and formulating electrolytes. It will also entail the development of testing protocols and methods as well as data analysis to support the development of electrochemical systems. The work is anticipated to be extremely hands-on, with a significant amount of time spent working in the lab. You will need to be versatile, be able to participate in multidisciplinary research and be able to adapt your skills to emerging research fields. Furthermore, you should be able to disseminate and communicate research results clearly in the form of report writing and presentations.

Who are you?
In order to be successful in the role you will need good theoretical and practical knowledge of electrochemistry. Experience in energy storage technologies (such as batteries, fuel cells or supercapacitors) and electroanalytical techniques (such as electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry for various cell configurations) is important. Furthermore, experience in designing electrochemical systems, including methods for fabricating electrodes and formulating electrolytes is also important. Knowledge of material characterization and statistical data analysis techniques is advantageous. Finally, experience with risk assessments, chemical hazards and the KLARA system are a merit.

You have a PhD or equivalent education relevant to the field of electrochemistry as well as a few years work experience. You speak and write English fluently and are an enthusiastic and inspiring colleague. It is highly important that you are a team player with a pronounced teamwork ability. As our laboratory expert in electrochemistry within our multidisciplinary research environment you will need to be able to take the initiative and work independently without detailed guidance/supervision. You have a good understanding of industrial needs, high integrity and the ability to see the potential in the work that you and your colleagues perform.
